Sleep, my child; close your eyes
Dream of days when we were wise
When gift-crops bloomed ’neath shining skies
In dreams, escape your mother’s sighs
For lo, we were not wise enough
Not wise enough for you
Sleep, my child; day is gone
Night alone must carry on
Following the paths we’ve drawn
May you find the vanished dawn
For we cannot burn bright enough
Not bright enough for you
Sleep, my child; do not wake
Till once again the heavens shake
The earth—that you may rise to make
A world not even we could break
For we were never strong enough
Perhaps you will be strong enough
Our love was never strong enough
Not strong enough for you
